The Acorn A305 is the basic entry-level machine in the Archimedes range, so there isn't a backplane supplied. To make use of the expansion podules, a backplane must be fitted. In this case, it's a Watford Electronics one, although Acorn did supply their own. This is a 4-way backplane, allowing the maximum number of podules to be added. There were also 2-way backplanes available.
