Luckily it hadn't been damaged, and just needed new batteries.
I found, as I have on previous occasions, that it didn't want to work properly unless new charged up batteries were fitted. A lot of people tell you that Archimedii will work perfectly well without batteries, as long as you reset the CMOS RAM each time. That's not my experience. I have several 32-bit Acorns that definitely don't work properly unless they have a working battery in them, and it looks like my RPC 600 is one of them.
