This picture was taken immediately prior to the long laborious process of swapping modules between the working VP410 and the faulty VP415. The VP410 at the back has been partly disassembled so I can get at the modules and the VP415 has the lid off but is still otherwise assembled. The "test" Fawlty Towers disc is still in the tray.

As I didn't have a clue where to begin, the diagnostics being pretty unhelpful in directing me to which modules might be faulty, I adopted a methodical approach. The idea was to change each module in order starting with Module A, putting the VP410 module inside the VP415. After each change, I would test the player and run the diagnostics to see if the fault was cured.

As soon as the fault was cured, I would then know which module was faulty, and I could swap back all the other modules, one by one, testing after each change to make sure the player still worked.
