And we still have this curious disc fault, which now appears to have got worse.
In fact, what I discovered was happening was that the disc controller was timing out if the drive motor wasn't running when the command was issued. This also caused the phenomenon of only one disc appearing when the file server was put into user mode, because drive 4 timed out immediately but the drive motors for both drives - as they both operate when one of the drives is active - so only drive 5 was mounted.
