Nowadays when people talk about "formatting", they usually mean what in the Beeb hard disc world would be called "initialising"; that is, setting out the file structure. For ADFS, all that is required is that the first 7 sectors are written. Formatting as such doesn't need to happen because the card is already laid out in sectors that the controller can understand.
